At Interface Forestry, safety is at the core of everything we do. We recognize the inherent challenges and risks associated with working in the forestry sector, particularly in remote and rugged backcountry areas. That’s why we’ve developed a comprehensive approach to safety that combines cutting-edge technology, rigorous protocols, and a proactive mindset to protect our employees, ensure efficient communication, and mitigate potential risks on every project.
Monthly Health & Safety Meetings: Ongoing Training and Awareness
Safety is an ongoing commitment, which is why we hold mandatory health and safety meetings for all employees every month. It’s a chance to go over the latest safety practices, talk about any recent incidents or near-misses, and make sure everyone is up-to-date on regulations. Regular meetings foster a culture of awareness and accountability, where everyone is actively involved in maintaining a safe work environment.
Using the Right Tools for Safe and Efficient Communication
We understand the challenges of working in remote areas, which is why we equip our employees with the latest technology to ensure their safety and enable effective communication. In the forestry industry, particularly when working in the backcountry, clear communication is vital to prevent accidents and respond to emergencies quickly.
- Satellite Devices: Every employee is provided with a satellite communication device, allowing for reliable communication in areas where cell service is unavailable, helping us respond quickly in case of emergencies.
- Handheld Radios & Truck Radios: In addition to satellite devices, each employee is equipped with a handheld radio and a truck-mounted radio, ensuring reliable communication between team members. These radios are crucial for coordinating activities on-site and providing real-time updates on work progress, safety checks, and any potential hazards.
- Reliable 4WD Vehicles: All our employees drive 4WD vehicles and OHVs that are built for tough, unpredictable terrain, so they can safely get to and from remote work sites.
Hazard Assessments & Partner Check-Ins
In addition to the advanced technology we use, we place a strong emphasis on daily hazard assessments and regular partner check-ins to ensure safety throughout the day.
- Daily Hazard Assessments: Every morning, before beginning work, each team member conducts a hazard assessment of the worksite. This assessment involves identifying potential risks such as weather conditions, equipment issues, or environmental hazards. Any identified risks are addressed and recorded before work begins to ensure a safe and controlled environment.
- Partner Check-Ins: For added safety, our employees are required to check in with a partner multiple times throughout the day. This ensures everyone is safe, and no one is working alone in risky situations.
- Wildlife training: All our employees are trained in wildlife encounter safety, including carrying bear spray and knowing how to handle wildlife responsibly in the field.
